Youth and Education

In an effort to sustain small rural centers of the Mt. Adams Region, youth and communities have to be a part of the conversation. With our work at this point focused in Glenwood, youth and community considerations generate an increasing level of concern. The Glenwood School population has decreased by nearly fifty percent in six years despite all the offerings of a quality, small rural school. Family wage jobs and affordability of housing are other important issues for the community, for which Mt. Adams Resource Stewards has or is developing programs to address.

Mt. Adams Resource Stewards is working to support, enhance and develop new educational activities for Glenwood’s youth, based on our perspective that as a community we need to do everything we can to excite our young people about their future and that of the community.

Glenwood Greenhouse Project

We are developing a greenhouse project in association with the school district and Mt. Adams Community 4-H Gardening Club, to provide youth and community members a place to come together in a healthy environment.  Project planning began in late 2006 after students, school staff and 4-H participants expressed interest in a greenhouse to help gardening enthusiasts grow in what can be a challenging climate.  School projects and connecting local produce with after school snack and/or lunch programs were also identified as goals.

We are in the midst of raising funds to undertake the project.  The Washington Health Foundation awarded us a $10,000 matching grant for which we are currently seeking donations.  Learn about their Healthiest State in the Nation Campaign and help us meet this fundraising challenge!
