Prescribed Fire

Our local landscapes evolved with fire.

Through both natural ignitions and intentional burning by indigenous people, dry forests in the eastern Cascades historically experienced frequent, low- to moderate-severity fires whose exclusion over the past century has contributed to declines in forest health and resilience.

By returning fire to the landscape in an intentional and controlled setting, we can help restore ecosystem function and protect forests & communities from high-severity, catastrophic wildfire. MARS uses prescribed fire to steward our Mt. Adams Community Forest lands, and is also involved in numerous efforts to increase our local region’s capacity to safely implement prescribed burns.

MARS provides coordination and fiscal support to the Mt. Adams Prescribed Burn Association (PBA), a coalition of private land managers and community members working to make prescribed fire an accessible land stewardship tool on private lands. The PBA hosts trainings, manages an equipment cache, and coordinates volunteers to help implement burns.

MARS hosts an annual Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) to provide an immersive training opportunity for fire practitioners and land managers of all backgrounds. We partner with numerous organizations and agencies to implement prescribed burns across the Columbia Gorge region during the multi-week TREX event.
